Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in its solid form is dry ice.
Dry Ice is designed to maintain products at extremely cold temperatures. Dry Ice begins to sublimate (melt) at -78F. When it sublimates the ice turns back into gaseous CO2 and can cause a hazard. Proper monitoring of spaces where Dry Ice is stored and used is essential to employee safety and facility compliance.
A few common uses of dry ice include flash-freezing biological samples, preserving vaccinations or perishable items, creating special effects in entertainment and arenas, and ensuring the preservation and flavor of food during shipping and storage.
How safe is dry ice for professionals?
Dry ice can be a very detrimental hazard, specifically in small spaces that are not well-ventilated. When dry ice melts, it turns to a carbon dioxide gas and in a small space this gas can build up and make an individual unconscious, and in some cases, be fatal.
CO2 monitors and detectors are the only safe solution for Dry Ice storage and use. Monitoring for oxygen depletion is not sufficient and is discouraged by industry associations like the Compressed Gas Association (CGA). Ensure proper dry ice safety by utilizing the right CO2 safety solutions.
What precautions should I take with handling or using dry ice?
- Do not place it in a closed area
- Always use PPE equipment when handling/storing/using
- Install a CO2 safety monitor to safeguard employees and establishments
